About
Every year, thousands of people around the world get leukaemia. The Josep Carreras Foundation Against Leukaemia was founded in 1988 to help find a definitive cure for this disease and improve the quality of life of patients. For more than 30 years, we have had the challenge of making leukaemia, one day, a 100% curable disease.
Since 1991, we have managed, in close collaboration with the public health system, the official registry of bone marrow donors in Spain, REDMO. Transplants from unrelated donors are the only curative solution for a large proportion of leukaemia patients, as only one in four has a compatible family member. More than 9,000 people around the world have been able to undergo a transplant thanks to the research we carry out every day.
In 2010 we created the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC), one of the few centres in the world dedicated exclusively to leukaemia and other blood cancer diseases. The IJC aims to promote the development of research in the field of onco-haematology, speed up the application of new treatments, improve patient care and survival, contribute to the training of new researchers and establish synergies with other national and international research groups.
Support for patients and their families is crucial. For this reason, we have six reception flats for patients with limited financial resources who have to travel far from home to receive treatment. In addition, through our doctor's consultation service, we answer all the doubts or questions that patients and their family members face during the different stages of their treatment and recovery.
