The Sri Lanka Institute of Local Governance (SLILG)  was established under Parliamentary Act No. 31 of 1999 with the objective to enhance the institutional and management capabilities of Provincial Councils and Local Government agencies for the efficient and effective provisions of services to the people. It is mandated to conduct capacity building and supports the aims of the devolution process with promoting Good Governance through research, training, consultancies, dissemination of information leading to innovative and effective local governance.

Background of the Sri Lanka Institute of Local Governance
Mandated premier institution for Capacity Building of Provincial Councils and Local Authorities.

The Sri Lanka Institute of Local Governance (SLILG) was established under Parliamentary Act No. 31 of 1999 with the objective to enhance the institutional and management capabilities of Provincial Councils and Local Government agencies for the efficient and effective provisions of services to the people. It is mandated to conduct capacity building and supports the aims of the devolutionary process with promoting Good Governance through research, training, consultancies, dissemination of information leading to innovative and effective local governance.

The current Director is Mr. I.A.Hameed, who is the Chief Executive of the Institute. The SLILG is governed by the Governing Council which is currently chaired by Dr. Nihal Jayathilake Secretary to the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government.
