Despite strong economic growth in recent years, Bolivia remains one of the poorest countries in South America. Poverty is concentrated in rural areas and particularly affects women and indigenous populations.

The current development model is based on the extraction of primary resources, with significant environmental and social impacts, particularly on local communities. The state is the central player in the economy, but invests little in family farming. Agricultural production favors the export of foodstuffs rather than local, sustainable production that would ensure food security for the population.
