About
The Óscar Ribas University was created and promoted by the PITABEL-Prestação de Serviços, Limitada Group, whose corporate purpose is to provide services, including education at all levels.
The present name pays homage to the Angolan writer Óscar Bento Ribas, born in Angola in the city of Luanda, on August 17, 1909. He completed his 5th year at the Salvador Correia High School, having been a civil servant in the then Treasury Services.
Óscar Bento Ribas suffered from congenital rhinitis pigmentosa, which resulted in total blindness at the age of 36.
To support his writing talent, more than 20 literary works were compiled that portray the life and literature of an Angolan ethnic group. Thus, his first book, entitled “NUVENS QUE PASSAM” (PASSING NUMBERS), was published when he was only 17 years old. His writing personality transcends the borders of Angola, where many of his texts appear in anthologies that can be found in several countries with English translations.
He won several awards in the country and abroad, including the Order of the Infante, awarded by the Portuguese Government.
He founded the First School for the Visually Impaired in Angola, sponsored by the Portuguese ophthalmologist, Dr. Jorge dos Santos Lapa.
