About
Geten (then Gayten-LGBT) was founded in Belgrade in 2001 . It originated from the Arkadia association - the gay and lesbian lobby , which was founded in 1990. After the founding, activist organizations participated in the long-term project Campaign Against Homophobia (1994-2000) led by Dejan Nebrigić , winner of the Felipe de Souza Award. The name of the organization is inspired by Ghetten, the world of androgynous beings, described in Ursula Le Gwyn's book "The Left Hand of Darkness", which in its history had no wars and conflicts.
The particularity of this planet lies in its inhabitants who consistently and actively outstrip the expected gender roles, thus challenging the very idea of gender and gender binary, which is actually greatly reflected in our policies. In 2016, through a correspondence with Ursula Le Gwin, who got acquainted with our work, we got the permission to rename our organization to Geten, and in March 2019 we officially changed the name from Gayten-LGBT, the Center for Promotion of LGBTIQ Rights in Geten, LGBTIQA Rights Center.
