The Škocjan Caves are the first monument in Slovenia and in the classical Karst to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This places them in an honorable place among the natural monuments of the world. They are inscribed on the list of Ramsar Convention wetlands of global importance, as the first underground wetland in the world.
The main activities of the institute are:
• monitoring of natural and cultural heritage,
• monitoring the condition and analyzing natural values,
• participating in international projects, presentations and professional research of the park,
• maintaining, restoring and protecting natural and cultural heritage,
• ensuring professional presentation of the park and organizing training courses, and
• guiding visitors around the protected area.
