FAMO Hands of Hope CBO was born out of a deep-seated desire to transform the lives of vulnerable individuals in rural Busoga, a region rich in culture but grappling with significant social and economic challenges. The co-founders, who are themselves products of this region, witnessed the harsh realities faced by disadvantaged youth, orphans, teenage mothers, and families struggling with mental health issues. Growing up in Busoga, they were acutely aware of how poverty, limited access to education, healthcare disparities, and mental health stigmatization were impeding the potential of countless individuals.

What struck the founders most was the silent suffering of families, particularly parents and caregivers of autistic children. These parents often lacked the necessary support systems and resources to cope with the daily challenges of raising a child with special needs. The stigma associated with mental health and developmental disorders, such as autism, compounded their isolation. Many families felt abandoned, with no access to professional counseling or community support that could help them navigate these difficult circumstances.

This deeply personal understanding of the region’s needs fueled the vision to create an organization that would bridge these gaps and create lasting change. With an unwavering belief in the power of equal opportunities, FAMO Hands of Hope CBO was founded to provide holistic support, focusing on education, mental health care, and sustainable livelihoods. The goal was not only to offer immediate relief but to empower individuals and families with the tools and skills needed to become self-sufficient.

From its humble beginnings, FAMO has grown steadily, gaining the trust of the communities it serves. What started as a small initiative to offer life skills training to a few teenage mothers has evolved into a comprehensive organization with multiple programs aimed at empowering the most vulnerable. Over the years, FAMO has become a beacon of hope, touching the lives of hundreds of individuals, giving them the means to build better futures.

FAMO’s work is driven by a strong belief that mental health cannot be separated from broader community development. With 40% of our focus on mental health support, particularly for parents and caregivers of autistic children, we have integrated mental wellness into all our programs. Our counseling services, support groups, and awareness campaigns aim to destigmatize mental health, providing families with the necessary emotional and psychological tools to thrive.
