About

In the gentle valley of the Bednja River, nestled between the picturesque green hills of the Croatian Zagorje, with a history that dates back to the Old Stone Age, lies the town of Varaždinske Toplice. Already in ancient times, Varaždinske Toplice was known as the thermal spa Aquae Iasae, and their importance is also evidenced by the fact that they were renovated in the 4th century by the Roman Emperor Constantine.
According to balneological analysis, the water of Varaždinske Toplice is mineral calcium - sodium - hydrocarbonate - sulfate, sulfur hyperthermia 58°C. The work of the Special Hospital for Medical Rehabilitation of Varaždinske Toplice is based on the thousand-year-old tradition of using thermal sulfur water and medicinal peloids from natural sources.
The first book about Varaždinske Toplice, about its thermal water and its healing properties, was published back in 1709. This book in Latin, with a long title in the spirit of the time, the work of Dr. JL Payer, is also the first balneological work in Croatia.
Dr. Ivan Krstitelj Lalangue, a Croatized Luxembourger and founder of professional medical literature in the Croatian language, made a great effort to promote the development of Varaždinske Toplice. In his book on Croatian medicinal waters, published in 1779, he compares the thermal water of Varaždinske Toplice in terms of its healing properties to that of Baden near Vienna.
