About

HERTU Mushrooms Initiative, under HERTU Company Limited, is a Tanzanian-based social enterprise dedicated to transforming agriculture through innovative and sustainable mushroom farming. Originally launched in 2015 as a small-scale pilot, and formally registered under HERTU Company Limited in 2023, the initiative was born out of a passion for improving food systems through health-focused, environmentally friendly practices. HERTU Mushrooms Initiative specializes in the production and commercialization of organic mushrooms and a diverse range of value-added mushroom products including dried mushrooms, mushroom powder, and mushroom-based snacks such as samosas. These products are designed to meet the growing demand for nutritious, locally produced foods while reducing reliance on imported mushroom products.

Our production model is rooted in circular economy principles, using agricultural waste as the main substrate, which significantly lowers costs and enhances environmental sustainability. Beyond production, the initiative is deeply committed to inclusive development by empowering rural women, youth, and smallholder farmers through hands-on training, contract farming, entrepreneurship support, and agribusiness consultancy services. Revenue streams are generated through the sale of fresh mushrooms, value-added products, training programs, spawn sales, and contract-based farming partnerships. A portion of profits is reinvested into research, capacity-building, and community development to ensure long-term sustainability.
