About
The Alekos Fasianos Museum was designed and remodeled by architect Kyriakos Krokos in collaboration with artist Alekos Fasianos. The project was completed in 1995. The Museum opened its doors to the public in 2023.
The curatorship of the exhibition aims to introduce the scope of Alekos Fasianos' work. Works from 1956 to the end of the artist's life are presented. In the exhibition we encounter early works with an abstract mood from the 1960s and the first years in Paris. Works influenced by Byzantine art, collages, mixed media, obscure but widely recognizable paintings with Fasianos' most characteristic writing. The Myth of his neighborhood unfolds through works that represent images and experiences he acquired in the neighborhood of Agios Pavlos where he grew up and in his wanderings in Athens. Heroes of his childhood mingle with the heroes of Greek mythology, creating the eternal hero that is man. In addition to the paintings, the exhibition aims to highlight the artist’s multifaceted personality, presenting handmade objects, furniture and lighting as well as texts he wrote, books he illustrated and a rich archive of his involvement in the set and costume design for Aristophanes’ comedies and plays by Eugène Ionesco and Jean-Paul Sartre. The exhibition unfolds within a handmade architecture where every detail is curated by Fasianos, from the doorknobs to the handles on the cabinets, the nails on the mirrors and the frescoes and mosaic floors. The Alekos Fassianos Museum has remarkable importance for the contemporary visual and architectural map of Athens, as it is one of the few museums in the world where the synergy between artist and architect supports the dialogue between the works and the space that houses them.
