About

Ijebu Development Initiative on Poverty Reduction (IDIPR)

Origin and Establishment:

The Ijebu Development Initiative on Poverty Reduction (IDIPR) was established following a City Consultation on Poverty Reduction held from March 22–24, 1999, in Ijebu-Ode, under the patronage of His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) S. K. Adetona. Organized by the Development Policy Centre (DPC) and the African Centre for Development Strategic Studies (ACDESS), the consultation involved 400 stakeholders. Initially named the Ijebu-Ode Development Board on Poverty Reduction, it was renamed IDIPR after seven years to reflect its broader reach within the domain of the Awujale.

Core Objectives:

IDIPR aims to reduce poverty in Ijebuland through an institutional framework that mobilizes citizens to tackle unemployment, promote entrepreneurship, and provide financial aid and skill acquisition programs. Key focus areas include agriculture, tourism, arts and crafts, cooperative activities, and microfinance support.

Governance Structure:

The initiative operates under a voluntary, non-stipendiary governance model:
- Grand Patron: The Awujale of Ijebuland
- Board of Trustees: Oversees the initiative’s well-being
- Governing Council: Handles policy, funding, and development
- Management: Led by a CEO responsible for day-to-day operations

Key Programs:

IDIPR implements several community-focused programs:
- Medical & Health: Free health checkups, school clinics, community health services
- Microfinance: Loans and credit support for SMEs and market traders
- Youth Development: Career talks, mentorship, agricultural training, digital skills
- Enterprise Development: Transportation and agricultural projects

Major Milestones:

IDIPR has gained national and international recognition, including:
- The Dubai International Award for Best Practices (2002)
- Participation in international workshops and conferences
- Publications in prestigious journals like the *Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences* (USA)
- Commendations from former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel

Impact (1999–2023):

IDIPR has significantly benefited the community:
- Over 88,000 direct beneficiaries across youth, health, microfinance, and enterprise programs
- An estimated multiplier effect impacting over 1 million people
- Disbursed over ₦1.5 billion in loans by 2024
- Generated significant agricultural output and sales, e.g., ~₦5.77 billion in farm produce sales (2025)

IDIPR remains a vital grassroots organization dedicated to poverty reduction and sustainable development in Ijebuland, leveraging community participation and strategic partnerships to achieve its goals.
