Guatemala continues to be one of the countries with one of the highest levels of inequality in the world. With a population of almost 13 million, composed of 23 ethnic groups living in 108,000 km2, the gap between rich and poor continues to grow; mainly for women, children and indigenous people in rural areas.

The Guatemalan countryside
The extreme vulnerability due to environmental conditions and the lack of access to land for peasant production characterize the rural fabric in Guatemala. These factors, added to the expansion of the agribusiness (monocultures of sugarcane and African palm) that brings as a consequence the peasant conflict and criminalization, and the promotion of exports, generate a growing dependence on the food of the Guatemalan population.

The return to ancestral peasant technology
The search for Soberanía Alimentaria en Guatemala, strongly impacted by the bombardment of neoliberal currents, involves recovering ancestral peasant technologies to build sustainable local processes. From VSF in Guatemala we are promoting actions aimed at strengthening agricultural production models that are respectful with the environment. How do we do it? Through the recovery of soils for productions without agrochemicals, the promotion and consumption of native seeds, and sustainable agricultural production, which allows peasant economies to produce the food they consume.
