About

The Helmholtz Center Hereon conducts cutting-edge international research for a changing world: around 1,100 employees create knowledge and innovations for more resilience and sustainability. The scientific spectrum of the Hereon includes high-performance materials, processes and environmentally friendly technologies for mobility and new energy systems. In addition, biomaterials are researched for use in medicine and to increase the quality of life. With the help of research and consulting, the Hereon meets the challenges of climate change in a solution-oriented manner and enables sustainable management and protection of the coastal and marine environment through a comprehensive scientific understanding. Understanding it fundamentally, applying it practically – the interdisciplinary research spectrum covers a unique spectrum.

As part of an international network and as part of the Helmholtz Association, Hereon supports institutions from politics, business and society in shaping the future by transferring its expertise. Founded in 1956, the center is the largest non-university research institution in Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to the headquarters in Geesthacht and the location in Teltow near Berlin, Hereon has branch offices in Hamburg, Kiel, Berlin and Garching near Munich. The research center has an annual budget of around 130 million euros.

The name Hereon is made up of the terms "Helmholtz", "resilience" and "innovation" and is derived from the core messages of the current mission.
