About

NSG was originally formed in 1982 through a joint venture, Wimpey-Gilbert, to service the nuclear decommissioning market. In 1985, the Wimpey-Gilbert name changed to Nuclear Services Group, although the main shareholders remained as Wimpey Laboratories and GC Engineers with the addition of Birds Commercial Metals Ltd.

As the business grew to encompass land remediation, the company became NSG Environmental Ltd in 1990. During this period, the company also developed strong ties with CEGB and Nuclear Electric and became more and more involved with waste management development programmes, operating from two sites in Slough and Bolton.

In 1993, the company was put up for sale as the owners returned to their core businesses and the Slough office was closed. As NSG had a number of key development contracts and was seen as a key player in nuclear decommissioning, the company was bought by the NIS Ltd, who themselves had a long history in the nuclear market, and NIS Holdings Ltd was formed as the parent company. Following this, NSG moved from their premises in Bolton to a facility on the former Leyland Trucks site with a total of 12 staff.

During the next 10 years or so, the company expanded its business and secured significant contracts with AWE and Magnox Electric, establishing itself as a leading company within the nuclear waste management and decommissioning field. By 2007, it had outgrown its premises in Leyland and moved to its head office at Scientia House, Chorley. Today, NSG employs approximately 200 staff across its three business areas at various sites across the UK.
