About

The Global Women’s Institute (GWI) at the George Washington University (GW) launched in the Fall of 2012 as a university-wide initiative to advance gender equality through interdisciplinary research, education, and policy and outreach. GWI leads and supports projects that will make a difference in the lives of women at home and around the world by promoting research that strengthens the global knowledge base on gender, investing in education that prepares the next generation of leaders, and advocating for civic engagement to influence policymakers and raise awareness of women’s issues.

Leveraging Partnerships to Advance the Status of Women and Girls
GWI serves as a catalyst for action, linking faculty and students with international researchers, practitioners, activists, and policymakers to end violence against women and girls, empower women economically, and increase women’s participation and leadership in society.  GWI takes advantage of its affiliation with GW’s Women’s Studies Program—one of the oldest programs in the country-- and the expertise of university faculty engaged in research on global women’s issues in diverse fields such as law, international affairs, public health, public policy, economics, media, communications, and performing arts.  GWI also uses its proximity to the nation’s capital to participate in and contribute to high level policy events and promote the mission of the Institute with policymakers.
