About
The Association for the Development of Namarel and Surrounding Villages (ADENA) was created in September 1989. Its headquarters is in Namarel, in the rural community of Gamadji Saré (Podor), from the desire of the natives of the locality to take more responsibility and in the emancipation and progress of their area. It also has a liaison office in Dakar.
ADENA, supported by Oxfam-UK, operates in an area straddling the two departments of Linguère (Louga region) and Podor (Saint-Louis region), in northern Senegal. It affects five rural communities: Gamadji Saré, Guédé, Aéré Lao, Dodél and Lagbar. However, it should be noted that more than 3/4 of the sections are located in the Rural Community of Gamadji Saré. Although not very developed, the area contains significant animal resources. It totals on average 60,000 cattle, 12,000 sheep and goats and 10,000 horses and donkeys.
The association trained local people, particularly to repair the wells themselves.
Culture (gardening by women), education, health, and environmental issues are also part of ADENA's action plan. The association now has around 3,000 members, and it was on his example that people from two other areas had the idea of creating their own association.
