About

Founded in 1902, Guizhou University (GZU) was originally known as Guizhou Institute of Higher Learning. Later, it was turned into Provincial Guizhou University, National Guizhou College of Agriculture and Engineering, and National Guizhou University in the process of its development. In October 1950, it got its present name, Guizhou University. In November 1951, Mao Zedong, the then chairman of the country, inscribed in person the Chinese name of Guizhou University. In August 2004, it was merged and formed the current Guizhou University with Guizhou University of Technology. In December of the same year, the Provincial Government signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China to co-build Guizhou University. In September 2005, it was approved to be one of the key "211 Project" universities.

Along its over one-hundred-year history, Guizhou University has always exerted itself to uphold learning and cultivate students. Based on the needs of Guizhou Province, the University has cultivated over 220,000 graduates in various fields as well as the spirit of “Hard work and ceaseless self-improvement”. The university motto is “Illustrious virtue, utmost goodness, extensive learning and earnest practice.” Great emphasis is also laid on preciseness, diligence, practicality and innovation, under the guidance of which talents have been educated and cultivated, which has in turn contributed a lot to the economic and social development of Guizhou Province.
