Description: The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) supports small projects proposed and implemented by local organizations in Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal. The CFLI contributes to the overall goal of reducing poverty by providing funding for small projects that offer direct social, economic or technical assistance to local populations. The CFLI retains the same broad themes set out since 2016, which align closely with the 6 pillars of the Feminist International Assistance Policy. This allows flexibility to respond to and focus on themes relevant to local needs. The 6 thematic priorities include: (1) contributing to inclusive governance, including diversity and LGBTQ2, democracy, human rights and the rule of law; (2) contributing to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls; (3) contributing to peace and security, with a focus on conflict prevention and building peace; (4) contributing to growth that works for everyone, including women’s economic rights, decent jobs and entrepreneurship, investing in the poorest and most vulnerable, and safeguarding economic gains; (5) contributing to environment and climate action, focusing on adaptation, mitigation and water management; and (6) contributing to human dignity, covering health, education and nutrition.

About the Funding Agency

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) is the federal department responsible for managing Canada's diplomatic and consular relations, international trade, and foreign aid. Headquartered at the Lester B. Pearson Building at 125 Sussex Drive in Ottawa, Ontario, the main office acts as the core command center for shaping Canadian foreign policy. The headquarters team coordinates nationwide and global strategies, supporting the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of International Trade, and the Minister of International Development.

The main office in Ottawa directs a vast network of over 175 missions, embassies, and high commissions spread across the globe. Policy makers and analysts at this central site design programs for global peace, human rights, and international law. They also manage the Trade Commissioner Service to help Canadian companies export goods and find new economic opportunities overseas.

Additionally, the headquarters hosts the 24/7 Emergency Watch and Response Centre, which assists citizens facing crises abroad. Leadership teams inside the building work with international partners to deliver humanitarian aid and fund sustainable poverty-reduction projects. Through these coordinated domestic and international efforts, the headquarters ensures Canada's values remain active in a changing world.

Locations

Cape Verde

Cape Verde has prioritized infrastructure investment to support its service-oriented economy, particularly through upgrades to ports, airports, energy networks and transport links across the archipelago. Strengthening financing mechanisms - including public-private partnerships and innovative instruments - is key to bridging development finance gaps and sustaining growth.
