Description

Deadline 16 September 2016 - Capacity Development at ADVZ and seven educational institutions in complementary IWRM Education and Training

Requesting organisation
Agência de Desenvolvimento do Vale do Zambeze (ADVZ)

Description
The Zambezi Valley is the largest river basin in Southern Africa and home to about 40 million people who rely on the river for drinking water, fisheries, irrigation, hydropower production, mining and industry, ecosystem maintenance, and other uses. Transboundary management of shared water resources has been a continuing challenge for all of Southern Africa, particularly in the Zambezi River Basin. Water management in the basin is especially difficult because countries have multiple and competing interests; inadequate basin-level institutional structures; institutional, legal, economic, and human resource constraints; and poor data collection, poor communication, and inadequate training.

The Zambezi Valley comprises four provinces in Mozambique: Tete, Manica, Sofala and Zambézia. The region is known for its extremely rich natural resources, and suitability for agriculture, but lacks an integrated water resources management (IWRM) approach which focuses on the necessary integration of water management across different sectors, policies and institutions.

This project is geared to increase capacity in the field of IWRM, which includes strengthening the domestic water industry and developing professional (academic and vocational) training programmes. With the right capacities, the requesting organisations can promote and manage the development of the IWRM that delivers high quality of services and infrastructures (at local level) which will contribute for water productivity, and water safety, reducing the impact of floods and dry seasons. The ADVZ considers partnerships between private sector and educational institutes an important success factor to expose educational institutes (staff and students) to the challenges of the IWRM.

Portuguese is required as the working language.
