Opportunity Background
The proposed project is strategically aligned with the current Country Partnership Strategy for Vietnam which focuses on promoting socially inclusive and sustainable growth, improving public administration and governance, and increasing infrastructure investments for economic development and poverty alleviation. The technical aspect of the project shall strengthen public administration which is crucial for efficient service delivery; and the infrastructure investments under the project shall improve the delivery social services.
Opportunity Structure
The goal of the Urban Water Supply and Wastewater Project is to improve water, wastewater collection treatment and drainage services in Vietnam. The project is expected to be attained through the following components:
Component 1: Infrastructure Investments (US$ 141 million) - This will finance investments on water service extension, water source development, water network rehabilitation, sewerage extension, wastewater treatment, drainage and urban road pavement.
Component 2: Technical Assistance (US$ 9 million) - This will focus on institutional strengthening, project preparation and implementation support.
The project appraisal is scheduled on 06 December 2010. The project is expected to go the Board for approval on 21 April 2011.
The World Bank estimates the total project cost at US$ 150 million. The Vietnam Development Bank State Treasury shall be responsible for the implementation of the project.
Competitive Scope
The project is still in the early stages of preparation. It may be expected that civil works will be procured for the infrastructure investments and consulting services will be required for the technical assistance component of the project. Consultants are expected to provide assistance in the areas of institutional strengthening, project planning and implementation.

The project is expected to become effective on 30 September 2011 and is estimated to be completed by 30 December 2016.

The Board approved the project on 24 May 2011.

The Board Approval has been moved to 24 May 2011. The total project cost is now estimated at US$ 236.2 million.
