About the Organization

Abuse Never Becomes Us (A.N.B.U.) அன்பு, is a registered charity organization that works with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) within the Tamil community and aims to respond to sexual violence through culturally and linguistically appropriate programs and services. Our mandate is to provide holistic support to promote healing with survivors as well as raise awareness and build capacity through collaborations and partnerships with the community. A.N.B.U. is seeking a Graphic Designer for our pilot project under the A.N.B.U. Therapy Model.  

Job Description:

We are seeking a skilled and empathetic English to Tamil Translator to join our project addressing childhood sexual abuse in the Tamil diaspora in the GTA. In this role, you will play an important role in ensuring documents such as surveys, resource materials, and flyers can be accessible to Tamil-speaking survivors of childhood sexual abuse and their families/support network. Your translation expertise will contribute to raising awareness, providing support, and facilitating healing within the community. 

Responsibilities:

  • Translation: Accurately and efficiently translate written materials from English to Tamil, including but not limited to documents, surveys/questionnaires, and educational resources related to childhood sexual abuse while collaborating with team members including social worker, project coordinator and evaluator. 
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Understand the cultural nuances and sensitivities surrounding childhood sexual abuse in the Tamil community. Adapt translations to convey the intended meaning while respecting cultural norms and values. 
  • Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards when handling sensitive information shared by survivors and professionals. 
  • Terminology Research: Stay updated on terminology related to childhood sexual abuse, trauma, mental health, and related fields. Conduct research and consult resources to ensure accurate and up-to-date translations. 

Qualifications:

  • Fluency in both English and Tamil, including excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven experience in English to Tamil translation, preferably in a professional setting related to mental health, social work, or trauma-informed care.
  • Strong understanding of the cultural nuances and sensitivities of the Tamil community, particularly regarding issues related to childhood sexual abuse.
  • Sensitivity to trauma survivors and the ability to provide compassionate and supportive translations.
  • Familiarity with or willingness to build appropriate language around terminology related to childhood sexual abuse, mental health, and trauma.
  • Excellent research and organizational skills to maintain accurate documentation and resources.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and collaborate with professionals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of the Tamil community in Toronto and its cultural organizations/resources is an asset.
