POSITION SUMMARY
The Strategy & Communications Department is part of the Office of the Director – ODG – Division. Together with the Partnerships & Governance Department and the Delivery Department ODG Division supports the Director General (DG) on governance, partnerships, strategies, results, change management, communications, advisory services, organizational impact, human resources and the leadership of global initiatives. The ODG Division is both internal facing, in that it supports GGGI as whole to fulfil its strategic vision, and external facing in that it supports the DG in developing and maintaining relationships with partners and mobilizing resources. The ODG Division ensures the DG is effectively supported to play his role as the 'global voice' for green growth.
Under the Strategy & Communications Department, GGGI plans to establish a dedicated Data and AI Lab to lead the organization’s transition into a data-driven, digitally enabled institution. The Data and AI Lead will be responsible for shaping GGGI’s AI and data strategies, leading internal transformation initiatives, coordinating external partnerships, and positioning GGGI as a leader in “Environmentally Sustainable AI” applications. This role combines deep technical expertise with organizational leadership and strategic engagement.
PURPOSE
The Lead will:
Provide strategic direction and oversight for GGGI’s data and artificial intelligence initiatives, ensuring alignment with GGGI’s 2030 Strategy and green growth mission.
Help establish, fundraise for, and lead a high-performing Data and AI Lab team in GGGI, that would be part of the Strategy & Communications Department, fostering innovation, inclusivity and cross functional collaboration.
Monitor and analyze internal project proposals for potential AI integration and support development of AI-integrated concepts, including on AI powered Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV)
Design and support internal data and knowledge management initiatives to improve operational efficiency, evidence of decision-making, and institutional learning.
Develop partnerships with funds, technology companies, academia/research institutions and peer organizations to expand GGGI’s leadership role, funding, and products in the sector
Drive internal capacity-building programs in data analysis and artificial intelligence use, ensuring upskilling and the transfer of technical knowledge and best practices.
Identify, communicate and mitigate potential ethical and operational risks associated with AI in line with GGGI’s context and internal risk framework.
ENGAGEMENT
Serve as the focal point for AI and data initiatives across GGGI.
Regularly interact with Country, Regional and GGGI experts’ teams to identify and co-develop proposals where AI solutions can play a role.
Collaborate with GGGI sectoral leads to design cross-cutting projects where AI can play a role.
Collaborate with internal operations teams such as, for instance, the Technical Support Unit (TSU), Impact Evaluation Unit (IEU), and Human Resources (HR) to analyze and improve internal data management and analytics capacity.
Build technical networks and represent GGGI at AI-focused international forums and summits.
Collaborate with policy solutions to understand the AI strategies (and policies) of member countries to guide projects.
Mentor junior staff and improve knowledge retention across projects.
DELIVERY
In collaboration with GGGI’s Center for Thought Leadership, draft strategy to develop GGGI’s Data and AI lab.
Oversee technical staff, consultants and interns, and manage data team’s workplans and projects including the development of AI/ML models, data products, technical reports, and white papers in collaboration with project teams.
Lead the data team to advise and test on new AI products GGGI teams want to use.
Lead the development of AI-powered project concept notes and proposals in member countries for resource mobilization. Provide expert technical guidance to staff, ensuring alignment with GGGI’s mission and leveraging a deep understanding of AI.
Establish strong technical partnerships with identified partners (technology companies, AI summit coordinators, accelerator programs, donors, etc.).
Represent GGGI at global summits such as, for instance, ITU’s AI for Good, AI summits, etc. at the technical level.
Develop and monitor GGGI’s AI Strategy and positioning in line with activities and policies of Member States, and global discussions on AI.
Establish and maintain a knowledge-sharing environment, through structured training sessions and on-the-job learning opportunities.
Develop AI-related internal guidelines and policies to ensure compliance with international data privacy and security standards.
REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree (at least Master’s) in Computer Science, Data Science, AI/Machine Learning, Sustainable technology or related field with a focus on the field of AI.
7-10+ year leadership experience in Information Technology Architecture/Digitalization and 5+ years related to AI/data science, including at least 2years in senior or lead roles managing AI initiatives across research, innovation, or institutional transformation, with proven impact.
Demonstrated experience in running AI-related workshops, capacity building and other knowledge sharing events and drafting institutional guidelines/strategies.
Track record of contributing to academic or professional publications in AI/data fields (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, technical blogs, professional networking sites, among others).
Excellent command of English; and Korean, additional languages an asset.
FUNCTIONAL
Demonstrated technical expertise in AI/ML, data management and AI product development.
Experience working with international organizations or government entities on tech-enabled projects.
Strong understanding of ethics, sustainability, and in the field of AI, and data governance.
Ability to bridge technical and non-technical audiences with effective communication.
Familiarity with cloud services, open-source tools, and agile development methodologies.
