Project Overview:
Nicholas O’Dwyer is seeking an experienced Environmental & Social Specialist to support the Design & Build of Water Infrastructure in Amman, Jordan.
The successful candidate will lead environmental and social management activities across the project lifecycle, ensuring compliance with Environmental & Social Framework (ESF) requirements, national legislation, and project-specific environmental and social commitments. The role will focus on environmental and social risk management, stakeholder engagement, ESMP implementation, and safeguarding compliance within a Design & Build environment.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead environmental and social management activities across the project.
- Oversee implementation of Environmental & Social Management Plans (ESMPs) and environmental/social safeguards.
- Ensure compliance with World Bank ESF/ESS requirements, national legislation, and Employer requirements.
- Support environmental and social screening, assessments, mitigation measures, and monitoring activities.
- Lead stakeholder and community engagement activities.
- Identify and manage risks impacting vulnerable or disadvantaged groups.
- Coordinate environmental and social reporting and compliance monitoring.
- Liaise with project stakeholders, contractors, local authorities, and funding institutions.
- Support management of SEA/SH, grievance mechanisms, labour and community health & safety requirements.
- Provide environmental and social guidance to multidisciplinary teams.
- Undertake site visits and inspections as required.
- Perform additional duties as reasonably required.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:
- Minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience in environmental and social management for infrastructure projects.
- Degree qualified in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Social Science, Sociology, Anthropology, or another relevant discipline.
- Strong experience preparing and implementing ESIAs, ESMPs, environmental and social safeguards, and compliance monitoring for infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience of World Bank Environmental & Social Framework (ESF/ESS) or equivalent international financing institution standards.
- Experience in water, wastewater, or major infrastructure projects is highly desirable.
- Strong stakeholder and community engagement experience, including working with vulnerable or disadvantaged groups.
- Experience managing social risks, grievance mechanisms, labour issues, and community impacts.
- Familiarity with SEA/SH mitigation requirements, community health & safety, and environmental compliance obligations.
- Competent in office packages, Microsoft, excel PowerPoint etc.;
- Good time management skills, with the ability to prioritise work and manage many tasks concurrently;
- Excellent clear and concise communication skills and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team;
- Strong cultural awareness and understanding of working in developing countries;
