Description

The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) was formed in 1964 as a result of UN Security Council Resolution 186 to prevent a repeat of intercommunal violence between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

In the absence of a political solution to the Cyprus problem, UNFICYP has remained on the island to monitor ceasefire lines, maintain a buffer zone, conduct humanitarian operations and assist the Secretary-General's mission.

UNFICYP encourages the greatest possible return to regular civilian activity in the buffer zone, bearing in mind that the area is currently under constant armed surveillance by the military forces of both sides.

To accomplish this, it promotes the return of farming to the buffer zone where it is safe, as well as assisting both communities with issues relating to the supply of electricity and water across the borderlines.
