Description

Madhya Pradesh was formed on 01 November 1956 by merging the then Mahakaushal, Chhattisgarh, Central India, Bhopal, Vindhya Pradesh and Rajasthan sub-divisions Sinoj. Different components / laws related to Panchayat Raj system were prevalent in different components. With a view to bring uniformity in the Panchayat Raj system in the state, in the year 1962, with the necessary amendment from time to time, new Panchayat Acts were enacted in the year 1981 and 1990 to make the Madhya Pradesh Panchayat Raj system more powerful and effective. The Madhya Pradesh Panchayat Raj Act, 1993 (No. 1 of 1994) has been implemented in the State from 25 January 1994 in accordance with the 73rd Amendment Act 1992 of the Constitution of India.

Keeping in view the increasing activities and responsibilities of the Panchayat Raj Institutions day by day, the State Government took the decision on 06 December 2007 to set up an independent Panchayat Raj Directorate under the Panchayat and Rural Development Department. This Directorate is operational since 1 April 2008. The Chief Executive Officer of the District Panchayat is working at the district level under the administrative control of the Commissioner Panchayati Raj. Panchayat cell officers are working under them. At the block level, the Chief Executive Officer is working at the Janpad Panchayat and Gram Panchayat level.
