Argentina became implementing country in February 2019. The country was approved by the Board for adapted implementation given its federal structure. Each province owns and manages the natural resources in their territory. Argentina has therefore decided to implement the EITI in two phases. Phase one involves the national government, the industry and the civil society, while phase two is intended to also include relevant provinces.
Currently the country is working in the phase one of implementation, focusing on the federal level and is gathering data on the revenues collected by the central administration. Argentina aims to later develop provincial EITIs directed at implementing the initiative on the local level. Nonetheless, adhering to EITI is a matter subject to provincial autonomy so timeframe for each of the process might vary accordingly. So far, there has been one subnational EITI process initiated by the province of Salta in September 2019.
Argentina has approved their five-year National Anticorruption Plan including commitment to continue EITI implementation, as well as their 4th OGP National Action Plan, which includes transparency in the extractive sector as part of their first commitment.
