Carinthia is the southermost Austrian state and with its 9533 Km2 surface is the fifth widest Land. Carinthia borders the states of Salzburg, Styria and East Tyrol. Moreover, it shares a 170 Km border with Slovenia and a 109 Km border with Italy. Dreiländereck near Arnoldstein marks the meeting point of the three different culture.
The language spoken by the most part of the 560.000 Carinthian people is German. In the everyday life people speak above all the Carinthian dialect, a sort of Southern Bavarian dialect. The last census has pointed out that 2.4% of Carinthian people considers Slovenian as their current language. The settling area of the Slovenian ethnic group is located in the South of Carinthia.
