Description

Luena WASH: Small Grants for Community WASH Projects in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East & North Africa

Luena Foundation invites small, locally led organizations across Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East & North Africa to apply for microgrants of USD $1,000–$1,500 through its WASH program.

This call is specifically for grassroots organizations with annual revenue under USD $50,000 working directly with children and their communities. We fund practical, community-led projects that improve access to clean water, safe sanitation, and basic hygiene. Priority is given to solutions that address immediate needs and can be implemented quickly, such as repairing or extending existing water systems, improving sanitation facilities, installing handwashing stations, or strengthening local WASH infrastructure.

Projects must be:
Clearly defined and feasible within a $1,000–$1,500 budget
Focused on tangible improvements to water, sanitation, or hygiene access
Designed for short-term implementation
Supported by at least 25% community contribution (cash, materials, or in-kind)
We do not fund large-scale infrastructure, deep boreholes, regional water systems, or awareness-only activities without a clear physical or service outcome.

Luena Foundation partners with locally led organizations across the Global South and directs 100% of public donations to projects in the field. We prioritize solutions that are practical, modest in scope, and grounded in local realities.

Locations

Algeria

Algeria has seen a notable uptick in public and private investment, particularly in infrastructure, energy and transport, as part of broader economic transformation efforts. Strategic projects, including major rail corridors, urban mobility, desalination capacity and energy diversification, are underway, supported by increased foreign direct investment and partnerships with development banks. To deepen development impacts, Algeria continues to pursue economic diversification beyond hydrocarbons, improve regulatory and investment frameworks and enhance governance of infrastructure delivery.

Angola

In recent years, Angola has stepped up investment in repairing, expanding and modernising its infrastructure as a core pillar of post‑civil war reconstruction and economic development. While high levels of public investment have helped restore key transport, energy and water assets, improving the efficiency and quality of this investment will require strengthening financial markets, regulatory frameworks and infrastructure governance. According to InfraCompass 2020, Angola scores relatively low on these institutional drivers compared with many other countries, underscoring the importance of reforms to translate funding into sustainable economic outcomes.
