Description

Busara is a leading behavioral science organization in the Global South, where we apply behavioral science to help alleviate poverty through advisory work and original academic research.
We are a non-profit organization based in Nairobi, Kenya, and have offices and projects across the Global South. We also run the most extensive behavioral science research lab in the world, including mobile labs and partnerships with universities worldwide.

Role Purpose Statement:
Join us as a Behavioral Designer and become a part of the largest behavioral science advisory organization in the Global South as we expand our work within Latin America and the Caribbean! Our work is focused on sustainability, inclusive finance, and decreasing gender-based violence, among other sectors.

This is our first Brazil-based full-time role; you will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of our work there. You will shape our portfolio of development projects, work directly with Busara leadership and be part of a small, close-knit, young, and diverse team. Even though the Behavioral Designer will be based in Brazil, you’ll also work with senior staff across multiple projects, countries, and clients.

At Busara, a Behavioral Designer supports our research and applications of behavioral science in a variety of ways, including leading the planning, execution, and facilitation of co-design workshops, conducting UX/ UI research, developing and testing prototypes, creating insights and reports, and designing the core ideas for interventions. You must have extensive knowledge of behavioral science and HCD research methods, to help Busara identify the right tool to solve a particular behavioral challenge. You should also have strong research, synthesis, ideation, and visual storytelling skills.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
Design and test Behavioral and HCD research processes with users in the field. Lead Behavioral research processes both in person and remotely on a variety of our projects in Brazil and the Latin-American region. We are looking for someone who can:

  • Incorporate qualitative and quantitative insights from behavioral science, psychology, and economics into our projects.
  • Facilitate/ Co-Facilitate and co-design workshops in collaboration with our Qualitative and Design staff, clients, and other members of our working teams.
  • Provide ad-hoc support to projects with design research. This can include providing support with prototyping, conducting UX research, and helping create solutions for our projects.
  • Generate key research materials, such as pre-analysis plans, recruitment protocols, analysis code templates, field officer training, and data check templates.
  • Develop and create graphical materials to present user profiles, personas, user journey maps, and process flows.
  • Develop low/high res wireframes, prototypes, and mockups for UX testing.
  • Conduct UX/CX and regular user research using the full range of behavioral research techniques: surveys, usability testing, text/structured data analysis, qualitative interviews, contextual observation, focus groups, and others.
  • Write reports and present findings to clients that directly answer their research questions.
  • Conduct design research with target audiences thought leaders, and other stakeholders in person and remotely.

Lead the delivery of design research outputs:

  • Assist or lead in crafting reports and presentations for our applied behavioral science clients.
  • Contribute to building out local academic and specialist networks.
  • Attend and present Busara’s work at academic and practitioner conferences in Brazil.
  • Keep abreast of developments in design, and promote design research capability within Busara through knowledge sharing and training activities and the development of new approaches with the Latin American team.
  • Manage design projects, including potentially a team of less-senior designers.

Support Qualitative and Design activities

  • Support the production of research best-practice guides and tools for internal use.
  • Provide ad-hoc analysis and writing support for business development, such as writing concept notes, attending client pitches, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience: Minimum Requirements

  • Training or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Experience Design, Behavioral Science, Human Centered Design (HCD), Design, Social Sciences, e.g., Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, International Development and Humanities, Economics, Public Policy, or related fields.
  • Experience conducting design research within a business or development setting and planning and facilitating co-design workshops.
  • Experience in building and testing wireframes, prototypes, and mockups
  • 2+ years experience in UX/ UI design or design strategy, including customer behavioral research, ideation, prototyping, and user testing
  • Deep skill set and proven track record in one or more of the following design disciplines: Product design, service design, digital design & prototyping, and information visualization.
  • Expert knowledge of HCD and behavioral research methods and tools such as ethnographic or contextual research, concept generation, prototyping, usability study, information architecture, interaction design, etc.
  • Strong research, synthesis, ideation, and visual storytelling skills. Strong ability to present information in a concise, insightful, structured, and provocative way, both in written and oral forms.
  • Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and a team player.
  • Strong ability to communicate the power of design to stakeholders from varied backgrounds.
  • Working knowledge of research methodologies, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, and statistics
  • Experience working with low-income populations in emerging markets and applying behavioral or psychological constructs and theories to design approaches.

Desired Qualifications

  • Training or experience equivalent to a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Experience Design, Human Centered Design (HCD), Design, Social Sciences, e.g., Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, International Development and Humanities, Economics, Public Policy, or related fields.
  • Experience managing or mentoring staff.
  • Deep expertise in applied behavioral science.
  • Previous experience conducting research and understanding experimental design, including RCTs and A/B testing.
  • We don’t evaluate what school you went to, who you know, or where you previously worked. Prior experiences can certainly help you on the job, but what really matters during our hiring process is that you have the skills, knowledge, and passion to use behavioral design and behavioral science for good at Busara. Show us what you can do.

To Note: As applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the vacancy is filled, you are encouraged to submit your application soonest possible.
