Fiji is a small island developing state in the South Pacific, spanning a land area of 18,300 square kilometers and consists of over 300 islands, of which 110 are inhabited. Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, being the largest islands, are home to about 97% of the 900,000 population.  The urban population increase has been driven by factors like natural population growth and rural-urban migration. This urbanization is marked by an increase in informal settlements, which poses significant challenges to solid waste management. Informal settlements, lacking proper sanitation and waste services, contribute to environmental degradation and health risks.
