Ten donors in the humanitarian sector that every development organization should follow

International donors commit billions of US dollars to humanitarian assistance in the farthest, most underdeveloped regions or those that are affected by conflict and disaster. However, before their funds can be turned into technical assistance or the management of humanitarian and relief programs, a complex international public procurement process has to take place. Today, DevelopmentAid, which enables major tenders and grant notices to be made public, presents the TOP-10 donors listed by the number of tenders and grant notices in the humanitarian sector published on the DevelopmentAid.org platform.

In 2019, DevelopmentAid published 394 tenders and 234 grant notices that focused on the humanitarian sector. These figures only include announcements that were published, open for bidding and successfully awarded during 2019. All in all, DevelopmentAid gathered business intelligence information about tenders in the humanitarian sector from more than 50 international donors.

Among the TOP-10 donors who provided funding for the humanitarian sector were the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) who issued 167 tender announcements, almost 45% of the total. These three donors were the most active in the humanitarian sector.

Sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia and the Middle East are home to permanent humanitarian crises caused by conflicts, natural disasters and corruption. Yemen, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Syria, Nigeria, Venezuela, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Chad and Myanmar are the countries with the most vulnerable populations and high levels of poverty. In these countries, the ongoing crises could lead to unimaginable consequences if they are not addressed by the international community.

Geographically, most of the tender notices published in 2019 on the developmentaid.org platform, targeted Asia (144), Africa (94) and North America (56).

In total, 223 grant notices were posted on the developmentaid.org platform by over 40 organizations in 2019.

The World Food Programme (USA), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the UN Office for Project Services were the most active donors in terms of grant allocation.
