SAMEA is pleased to present the 2021 Capacity Building Workshops which will be presented once again this year virtually.
The theme of this year’s workshops is: Monitoring and Evaluation in the context of Global Crises.
Registration opens: Wednesday, 05 May at 12.00 (noon-SAST). Register online
In referring to global crises in plural, we recognise that the COVID-19 pandemic is only one challenge that faces humankind. The crisis has brought a setback against the achievement of the 2020 Sustainable Development Goals and dealt a vast, global economic blow to the public, private and voluntary sectors. Efforts at recovery and “building forward better” will happen within a politically contested, complex environment with several other systems also at risk or already deemed in crisis. This is already manifesting vividly in poverty, inequality, and social unrest.
As has been the case during successive phases of the COVID-19 experience, we can expect that these challenges will continue to place tremendous pressure on decision-makers to act promptly, apply sound judgement, and use the best available information.
The implications of this crisis environment for M&E are twofold. Clearly, the role of M&E to support evidence-based decision-making is more crucial than ever. At the same time, it is more important than ever for M&E practitioners to approach their work in a way that accounts for complexity and uncertainty; enables adaptive management; and is sensitive to vulnerabilities, risks, and power disparities. Established M&E practitioners must strengthen their practice in these ways while emerging practitioners should be introduced to these approaches as part of the fundamentals of the discipline.
The need for capacity building around M&E in crisis came through strongly in the Training Needs Assessment exercise that SAMEA conducted in early 2021 to inform the workshops. Workshops will integrate this theme into their offerings, which will be organised according to the following broad strands (as identified in the Needs Assessment). Presenters will share their expertise not only in
relation to COVID-19 but the other major challenges facing the continent and the world.
1. “Fundamentals during flux”: Relevant M&E tools, frameworks, indicators, or guidelines for reporting in the context of a global crisis.
2. Specific M&E designs and approaches for a crisis or rapidly changing context.
3. Quantitative analysis and statistical methods.
4. Being an M&E practitioner or manager in the context of a global crisis.
