About
The African Institute for Urban Management (IAGU) is an international NGO created in 1987 with the aim of supporting municipalities and city authorities in West and Central Africa to strengthen their planning and management capacities. to improve local governance, the environment and fight against poverty.
Mission
IAGU's mission is to support municipalities in West and Central Africa to strengthen their planning and management capacities to build inclusive, prosperous and sustainable cities.
Approach and organization
The IAGU acts through technical support to local authorities, the dissemination of innovations resulting from research and local experiments, the conduct of service provision and capacity building missions. It carries out its mandate on the basis of requests made and needs expressed by local authorities, grassroots community organizations, cooperation agencies and other actors in urban management. To this end, it constantly assists African cities in the development, formulation and implementation of local strategies and policies for sustainable development.
It proceeds through participatory research/action, training, information, technical support and the conduct of feasibility and sectoral studies through three (3) poles: Environmental Planning, Waste Management and Urban Agriculture. Its management staff is made up of program managers and project managers who are engineers, environmentalists, geographers-planners, geomaticians, socio-economists and sociologists.
The IAGU has positioned itself, in recent years, as a reference institution in the field of waste management in Africa south of the Sahara. In addition to the reference documents that have been published, the Institute has conducted several studies and research and/or consultation processes in the sub-region. To this end, it has been approached several times by international institutions including the UNDP, the World Bank, UN Habitat, bilateral cooperation agencies to assist, advise, coordinate, help lead, support or facilitate initiatives in the field of urban solid waste.
