About

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is an examination board tasked with determining the examinations needed in the public interest in English-speaking West African nations, conducting the examinations and awarding certificates comparable to those of equivalent examining officials internationally.

Since its inception in 1952, the council has made a significant contribution to education in Anglophonic West African countries (Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia and the Gambia) and has established an endowment fund to support education in West Africa via lectures and assistance to individuals who cannot afford school.

The council has built a team of well-trained and highly motivated professionals and has conducted examinations that are relevant and appropriate for the educational objectives of member countries. Over three million candidates register for WAEC-coordinated exams in a single year and the council also assists other examination bodies, both local and worldwide, in the coordination of examinations.
