About
As it is known emphasizes the importance of environmentally sound technologies, education, public awareness and training in achieving the goals of sustainable development. It also recognizes the importance of capacity building especially and environmental education in developing countries in order that strategies for sustainable development could be implemented. It is within this context that SANREM was later established. The planning, consultation and preparations toward the establishment of the organization started in Nairobi, Kenya by a group of African scholars in the fields on environment, agriculture, development, economics and policy and law.
SANREM was established as a result of the desire of civil society organizations to take advantage of mutual interests, distinct geographic situations and diverse skills in the area of environment and sustainable development.
The ultimate objective of SANREM was to promote the organization and coordination of activities within the regional NGO community, promote environmental education and capacity building and, consequently, foster a more influential environmental civil society in the region. As an important catalyst in this process, the organization was also set up to promote networking and cooperation among regional environmental NGOs to share information, raise their capacity to participate in regional work relating to sustainable development.
SANREM is an international non-governmental organization for members. Our aims are to promote and implement sustainable development practices and policies in Africa. We raise awareness and improve knowledge of global, regional and national environmental issues affecting Africa, especially those relating to international conventions on biodiversity, desertification and climate change.
We campaign to the international community so that Africa’s environmental challenges are addressed while at the same time combating poverty and promoting socio-economic development. We focus on advancing environmental justice and sustainability in order to relieve poverty and improve the living conditions of socially and economically disadvantaged communities.
