GANIL has a special status, in the form of an Economic Interest Group (GIE) held in equal parts by the CEA (Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique) and the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research). This status, unique in the world of research, was chosen in 1976 to facilitate the construction of the equipment and its subsequent management. The management of GANIL changes every 5 years. It is alternately taken by the CEA and the CNRS, sharing the positions of Director of GANIL and Deputy Director.
