The Estonian Teachers' Union is a voluntary, independent, democratic professional association of pedagogues, which is the legal successor of the Estonian Teachers' Union, which operated in the years 1917-1940, and continues the activities of this organization.
The goals of the Union are
- emphasizing the role of the teacher in society
- conceptualization and promotion of national education and culture
- representing and protecting teachers' professional interests
- expanding opportunities for teacher preparation and self-improvement and cooperation with teacher training universities and other schools
- participation as a citizen's initiative in the shaping of Estonian education policy and strategy and in the improvement of related laws
- cooperation with pedagogic researchers and other persons and associations in the same field or close to it in Estonia and outside Estonia
- participation in international projects
In achieving its goals, the Estonian Teachers' Union is based on humanist ideas and ethics specific to pedagogy and the basic principles of democracy, its activities are based on the initiative and social activity of its members.
