About

The Western Ruhr Area Biological Station (BSWR) is active in local and regional nature and species conservation in the cities of Bottrop, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr and Oberhausen and cooperates with the nature conservation authorities and associations. The main task is to look after nature reserves and the important international Natura 2000 protected areas.
In addition, one focus of the work is the research and preservation of the urban biodiversity of the central Ruhr area. Of particular importance here is the subject of industrial nature, the nature on fallow land of the former steel and mining industry.
In addition to this scientific work, practical measures for biotope and species protection have sought high priority.
