About
The Royal Dramatic Theatre, better known as Dramaten, is Sweden's national stage. The theater operates based on a mission from the government, which, among other things, means that the theater must manage theater history as well as work for the development of theater art. Dramaten thus plays classics, newly written theater and theater for children and young people. The theater is 100 percent owned by the Swedish state. CEO is Maria Groop Russel. As of March 1, 2020, Mattias Andersson is artistic director.
Nowadays, Dramaten is housed in the beautiful marble palace at Nybroplan. It was designed by Fredrik Lilljekvist and was inaugurated in February 1908 with Strindberg's Master Olof. In the spring of 1945, the theater was able to purchase the cinema Sibyllan, which was located in the building behind the theater. Here, in April of the same year, the Dramaten opened its second stage, the Studion, soon called the Little Stage.
SWEDISH PERFORMING ARTS
Dramaten is a member of Svensk Scenkonst, employer and industry organization in music, dance and theatre. The organization represents over 100 members and works to create good conditions for the performing arts. The membership should contribute to Dramaten living up to the expectations of being a professional employer with modern collective agreements, a good working environment and the opportunity to offer good development opportunities.
