Yangon School of Political Science - YSPS

The Yangon School of Political Science was founded on September 5, 2011 by former political prisoners. The goal was to create an independent university, while at the same time engaging in the country’s democratic transition process. Through our work, we hoped to create progressive, democratically-minded citizens who would help Myanmar to make the successful transition towards a sustainable democratic future. Since then, YSPS has more than doubled in size, with a core group of people working diligently to research and advocate for solutions to issues of governance and democracy in Myanmar. We have had the opportunity to work with researchers from across the globe on the most pressing difficulties facing our country, and have discussed implementing our solutions with parliamentarians in Naypyidaw.

YSPS provides education on political science to all those who are interested in this fundamentally important topic. We conduct classes, hold seminars and workshops, and work with students and civil society. We engage not only as a political education provider, but also as a politically independent institution which critically assesses the reform process and shares opinions with civil society, political stakeholders, and the international community. YSPS aims to become a formal academic institution with expertise on research-based education with a special focus on political science and democracy.
