About
The Center for Investigative Journalism is a non-profit association created to develop investigative journalism in the public interest.
Investigative journalism helps promote open, accountable and fair democracy by exposing wrongdoing and holding power to account. However, investigative journalism faces both internal threats (resource constraints in a changing and commercial media environment) and external threats (restrictive laws, policies and practices).
Investigative journalism is an expensive and risky investment. It takes time and resources to succeed; discover facts beyond the apparent; to keep the powerful in mind.
In a purely commercial environment, investigative journalism often struggles to compete with fast-food, instantly rewarding journalism – the kind that sells newspapers today but involves the fish tomorrow.
Donor-funded non-profit models represent an alternative to gaining ground around the world. Adequate nonprofit funding helps ensure that the public interest in exposing the wrongdoing is fulfilled.
