Brazilian Institute for Consumers Defense / Instituto Brasileiro de Defesa do Consumidor

Idec (Brazilian Institute of Consumer Defense) is a non-profit consumer association, independent of companies, parties or governments.

Founded in 1987 by a group of volunteers, our mission is to guide, raise awareness, defend ethics in consumer relations and, above all, fight for the rights of consumer-citizens like you.

We are a prestigious organization inside and outside Brazil. We accumulated important struggles and achievements that were only possible due to the help of our associates and partners , who contribute to the autonomy of our work.

The main objectives of IDEC are to contribute to a balanced and fair marketplace, enforce and enhance consumer legislation; to promote consumer welfare, to improve the standards of sustainable consumption and to further the goals of democracy by stimulating citizen awareness and participation. IDEC tests and evaluates products and services (including public services) and produces ground-breaking research through reports and case studies, the findings of which are disseminated through their monthly magazine ‘Revista do Idec’ and sent to members and subscribers throughout Brasil.
