Ethiopia is located in East Africa and is home to over 110 million people. Often called the "Cradle of Humanity," Ethiopia has an ancient culture rich with tradition, language, music and delicious food. While Ethiopia has achieved significant economic growth in the past two decades, it still remains a low-income country with 25% of the population living in extreme poverty (defined as living on less than $1.90 a day.)

WEEMA specifically operates in two zones and one special woreda in Southwestern Ethiopia.  These areas, Kembata-Tembaro, Hadiya, and Halaba, have a combined population of approximately 3 million.  Like in much of Ethiopia, most people work as subsistence, smallholder farmers.  These farmers and their families remain very vulnerable to Ethiopia's cyclical droughts- droughts that are intensifying due to climate change.
