1.0         BACKGROUND INFORMATION 

Save for Development and Relief Association (SADERA) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) formed in June 2002 in Kasulu, Kigoma region, Tanzania.  Its registration number is SO.NO.12087, issued on 29th August 2003 by Registrar of Societies by then at The Ministry of Home Affairs. There after SADERA Complied with Tanzania’s NGO Act No. 24 of 2002 by Certificate of Compliance No. 00001461 issued on 15th March 2012.

SADERA is a voluntary, democratic, non-partisan and non-profit making organization.

This organization (SADERA) was formed following poverty conditions which make most of the people in Kasulu District to have low living standards.  One indicator of this fact is that by year 2002 the district income per capita was Tshs 154,000/= against Tshs 280,000/= National Income per Capital the year 2000.

So far, the natural resources in the district are being depilated without the matching replacement and improvement approaches following the increasing population and the impact of refugees from Burundi and DRC. 

This organization therefore aims at POVERTY ERADICATION to Kasulu and entire Kigoma region community. 

This organization works in close collaboration with the Government, Local Government Authorities, other Non – Governmental Organizations, International Development Agencies, Civil Societies Organizations, Local groups and individuals who strive to affect the development process. 

2.0         SADERA’s VISION:

To have a POVERTY FREE COMMUNITY in Kasulu District, Kigoma region and other localities in Tanzania which will become our targets. 

3.0         SADERA’s MISSION:

To provide services which will contribute to economic and social developments, environmental conservation measures, appropriate utilization and conservation of natural resources.  And give relief to vulnerable groups in the society. 

4.0         SADERA’s GOALS:

The goals of SADERA are to support the Government effort and Non-Government Organizations whose objective are direct to Social and Community Services, and Human Rights in pursuit to its objective in respect of improved Socio-Economic status of people in Tanzania.

5.0         SADERA’s OBJECTIVES.

(i)           To encourage, to stimulate, to facilitate and to promote individual and local communities’ initiatives and efforts towards self-reliance in particular for community’s vulnerable and needy groups. 

(ii)          To find solutions to the problems of orphans, street children, child abuse, Youth unemployment child labor, use of illicit drugs and discrimination on community participatory based approach.

(iii)         To facilitate training programs for local leaders, leaders of community-based Organization and public at large on civic Education as well as Civic and Human Rights as well as to advocate and empower gender participation in Social and Community Development activities

(iv)         To create community awareness and to take measures on the burning issues of Environmental Conservation and Climate Change, Health and Nutrition affairs, Formal and Non-Formal Education problems, as well as Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). 

(v)          To deal with Industrial, Agricultural and livestock development and other Community Economic activities so as to enhance productivity.

6.0         ORGANISATIONAL EXPERIENCES.

6.1: Capacity Building.

  • In April 2022 and June 2022, 5 (Five) SADERA staffs and 1 Community Health Workers (CHW) attended training on Leadership, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Youth inclusion in leadership at different community levels and Entrepreneurship skills through AfriYAN Tanzania Chapter (Africa Youth Network - Tanzania).
  • In April 2021, April 2022 and June 2022, two SADERA’s Staffs were capacitated in Advocacy, Transparency and social accountability and community score cards through Amref Health Africa - Tanzania.
  • From 2019 to January 2022, 50 volunteers were capacitated to facilitate Youth Platforms under USAID - Tulonge Afya Project, where youth groups were formed to make them aware about Reproductive Health, HIV/AIDS, Nutrition, TB, Malaria Control and Prevention.
  • From 2019 to January 2022, 72 volunteers were capacitated to facilitate Adult Platforms under USAID - Tulonge Afya Project, where adult groups were formed to make them aware about Reproductive and child Health, Family Planning, HIV/AIDS, Nutrition, TB, Malaria Control and Prevention.
  • In June 2018, 11 (eleven) Community Health Workers (CHW) were capacitated in Human Nutrition in ASTUTE Project by SADERA which was funded by PANITA.
  • In March 2018, 5 (five) SADERA Staffs were capacitated in Human Nutrition in ASTUTE Project which was funded by PANITA.
  • In 2014, SADERA members were trained in Social Behavioral Change Communication against Malaria, under the COMMIT Project through JHU CCP and PSI Tz.
  • SADERA’s female members have adopted a system of counseling HIV/AIDS victims, particularly widows.  They are running operations of serving them with basic domestic items and schooling items to orphaned school children.
  • 5 members of the Executive Committee and Volunteers were facilitators on Improved Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Programme ran by African Youth Alliance (AYA) in Kasulu District the years 2007 to 2010, as well as Cholera control and prevention campaigns.
  • 2007 to date, SADERA’s Staffs (6) have participated in different training and campaigns against HIV/AIDS Spread, Family Planning and Reproductive Health, Malaria Control and Prevention and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Campaign.

6.2: Development Projects to date.

SADERA’s Executive Committee managed to implement eleven Community Based Projects as follows: -

  1. Implementation of a project namely USAID TULONGE AFYA with funding from USAID through FHI 360 and Tanzania Communication Development Centre - TCDC, from March 2019 to January 2022. Platforms namely SITETEREKI, NAWEZA and FURAHA YANGU were practiced at community level using CHWs and Peer Educators to advocacy social behaviour change and communication.
  1. Implementation of project namely Addressing Stunting in Tanzania Early Project – ASTUTE / MTOTO MWEREVU, with funding from IMA World Health through Partnership for Nutrition in Tanzania - PANITA, from July 2018 to February 2020. 
  1. Implementation of project namely Focus on Malaria Communication (FMCP) with Funds from UK Comic Relief through Tanzania Communication and Development Centre (TCDC) based in Dsm Tanzania, the year 2017 to 2019. 
  1. Implementation of Tanzania Capacity and Communication Project from 2014 to 2016 under the financier USAID through JHU/TCDC Tz. The coverage was Kasulu and Buhigwe districts with 6 activities namely: -

·         Prevention and Proper Treatment of Malaria (Zama zimebadilika, Siyo kila homa ni Malaria – Nenda Ukapime!)

·         HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control (Tulizana, Tuko Wangapi?),

·         Family Planning Awareness,

·         Mother and Children Health Care and Support (Wazazi Nipendeni!),

·         TB Control and Prevention

·         Voluntarily Male Circumcision. 

  1. Conducting educational evaluation on Primary Education Learning Outcomes namely Uwezo Assessment 2015 and 2017 in Kasulu and Buhigwe districts with funding from Twaweza Uwezo - Tanzania.
  1. Implementation of Communication and Malaria Initiatives in Tanzania – COMMIT Project, the year 2010/2011 for the entire Kasulu District, from February 2010 up to March 2012 as phase one, and then from January 2013 to March 2014 as phase two, under USAID, John Hopkins University, National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) Tz, PSI Tz and KACON Kigoma.
  1. Women Empowerment Programme by providing 10 milling machines to women groups within Kasulu District. The project was financed by United Nations World Food Programme, 2010.
  1. Expansion of Rusesa Health Centre in Kasulu by constructing a maternity ward and one Medical staff house of three rooms. The project financed by the Embassy of Japan in Tanzania in the year 2010.
  1. Training of 30 HIV/AIDS orphaned and vulnerable girls in tailoring skills and provided them with a tailoring machine for each trainee on their graduation, the year 2008. The project was financed by Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS) through CARE International as a facilitating agent.
  1. Implementation of Capacity Building Project with funds from The Foundation for Civil Societies (FCS – Dsm), where training on Strategic Planning, National Environmental Policy of 1997 and its Act of 2004 were provided to the Board members, management team and the association members, the year 2014. 
  1. Implementation of NSC - National Sanitation Campaign with funding from Unicef – Tanzania, the year 2010, where following activities were implemented:

²  Construction of Latrines and Hand Wash Facilities at Primary Schools

²  Introduction of School WASH Clubs

²  Menstrual Hygiene Management Education to school’s girls

7.0         FUTURE PLANS:

ii).      To Promote income generating activities by local groups and individuals.

(ii).     To Provide management advisory and consultancy services in issues of project planning and management to local groups and civil societies organizations.

(iii).     To Deal with matters related to Education, Health and Nutrition, Agriculture and Livestock sectors as well as Environmental Conservation Initiatives, Civic Education and Human Rights.

(iv).    Facilitate and support programmes which focus on vulnerable and disadvantaged persons in society.

(v).     Any other aspect which will arise as enumerated in section 4.0.

(vi).    To collaborate with any other development partners to implement any community development project within or outside of Kigoma region - Tanzania.

8:0.     AREA OF OPERATION

Save for Development and Relief Association (SADERA) is operating its activities Tanzania in Kigoma Region currently in 5 Districts namely Kasulu, Kibondo, Kakonko and Buhigwe Districts in Kigoma Region, and Kinondoni District in Dar es salaam Region, through its functional offices situated in mentioned districts. Depending on the nature of activities and funding in the near future SADERA will extend its services in other regions, as well as Tanzania Mainland is concerned.
