About
The Maastricht Forensic Institute was founded in 2008 by Maastricht University and DSM Resolve with financial support from the European Commission and the Province of Limburg. The main goal is to provide a socially relevant contribution to the legal system in the Netherlands.
Careful forensic investigation is essential, according to TMFI, for a fair trial for suspects in which convictions can also be based on sound forensic evidence. Good forensic research is based on two pillars according to TMFI: validity and responsiveness. Validity, or a solid scientific basis, guarantees the objectivity of the findings and the quality of the reports. Responsiveness is important, because fast delivery times for tracing research can determine the direction and quality of further research, for the progress of the judicial process and for optimum use of the resources deployed.
TMFI works closely with various research institutes, particularly in the field of material and toxicological research. In addition, TMFI has its own forensic DNA lab and can also make use of the expertise of various departments of Maastricht University in cases.
