About

EPEM Engineering S.A. was established in 2006, in Athens, Greece, and specializes in the provision of environmental engineering and consulting services.

EPEM Engineering S.A. is renowned for establishing a standard of design meeting European benchmarks and is a leader in providing efficient and cost-effective solutions. Committed to developing and transforming relationships with our clients, extracting the highest degree of value from projects is our most important objective.

We provide services for both routine design and construction of waste and wastewater infrastructures and strategic or innovative based projects, which help deliver critical site performance, economic and environmental outcomes. We work interdisciplinary, combining business, technical and country-specific know-how to meet the requirements of complex projects. We work for both private and public clients at national and international level. Our team provides services to a range of industries and sectors (National Governments, Municipalities, industries, NGOs, Donors etc.).

Success criteria for EPEM Engineering depend on the implementation of sustainable solutions for environmental problems. EPEM Engineering is seeking for solutions beyond the limits of conventional consulting services. We are committed to providing our clients with a service that is uniquely tailored to each situation.

An outlook at EPEM Engineering’s general experience, focused in Solid Waste Management is presented below:

Design, Construction and Operation of Waste Management Facilities (WMFs)

Our approach: We design while considering the construction and operation phase. We support construction and operation by anticipating site rehabilitation.

Our Experience: Long experience in creating conceptual and detailed design studies and tender documents, and providing technical support during the construction and operation phase of the facilities

Rehabilitation of Uncontrolled Landfills

A multi-factor problem: The preparation and implementation of the rehabilitation plan of an Uncontrolled Landfill (UL) has many dimensions. Lack of data regarding the site profile, the management of the multiple uncertainties (waste quantity and quality, decomposition processes etc) that exist and the inadequate financial resources, usually lead to a standardized approach with no true application.

Our advantage: EPEM Engineering has worked systematically on UL rehabilitation, therefore, a special methodology has been created based on:

  • Optimum utilization of financial resources
  • Information recovery-design of a decomposition simulation model
  • Diagnostic mapping of the UL
  • Environmental Cost – Benefit Analysis for each separate work

Solid Waste Treatment Facilities

Our perspective: Establishing solid waste treatment facilities consists of a significant cost. However, its viability is more critical than its construction. This is why such facilities require careful preparation and consideration of not only the legislative targets for waste utilization / minimization, but also the socio- economical status of the area the facility will serve.

The key is the integrated approach: EPEM Engineering’s experience indicates that the following issues have to be considered:

  • The available market for the facility products and the possible income
  • The operational cost of the facility
  • The establishment of a Public Actor for the management of the facility (including promoting, distributing and selling the products)
  • The necessity of the facility construction

Recycling / Reuse of Solid Wastes

Our experience shows that an integrated solution is required, instead of a fragmented confrontation. Key issues include:

  • Defining material input and output (relates to the correct estimation of the material recovery rates)
  • Estimation of operational costs
  • The stakeholders involved in the management and exploitation of a recycling scheme (for example: a co-operation of municipalities)
  • Market of the recycled materials
  • Awareness Campaigns for ensuring citizens’ participation
