About

Jembi is an African non-profit organization registered in South Africa and in Mozambique as a local organization in consortium with Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM). Since 2007, Jembi has established a reputation as one of the leading specialists in information systems in Africa, delivering needs-driven solutions increasing information availability, quality, access and transparency. Jembi has developed regional and country programs in South Africa, Mozambique, Rwanda, Zambia, Cameroon, Malawi, Kenya and a rapidly growing continental footprint through projects in other African countries, including Lesotho, eSwatini, Tanzania and Uganda.

Jembi has over 14 years of experience in the development and implementation of large-scale IT systems and infrastructure for the public and private sectors, academic institutions and non-profit organizations. We promote the sustainability and proper use of the ICT systems and infrastructure we have developed, configured and implemented through the continuous training of local technicians. Jembi promotes the use of open architectures and open source systems, as well as standards and information systems that are interoperable, having recognized experience in customizing open source platforms to the country's needs, as well as their internationalization.

Our story began with the Open Architectures, Standards and Information Systems (OASIS) project, investigating open technologies in low-resource settings.

We soon needed a home for all this work. And so, with the assistance of two early OASIS funders, the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Rockefeller Foundation, we spun Jembi out of its original home in the South African Medical Research Council into an independent non-profit company. Continuing to grow with programmes in Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe. In 2009, we registered Jembi Health Systems as a non-profit company.
