On December 14, 1974 the Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Heritage was born, on the impulse of Giovanni Spadolini, who was its first owner.
Over the years, the name of the structure has undergone some changes, due to the expansion or greater definition of its skills.
Since 2013 it has been renamed the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.
It deals with the protection, enhancement and promotion of Italian cultural heritage: from archaeological heritage to historical-artistic and architectural heritage, from landscape to demo-ethno-anthropological heritage, from archival and library goods to contemporary art and architecture and from urban outskirts, and cinema, entertainment and tourism and, finally, the care of the collections of museums and places of state culture.
Since 2021: Ministero della cultura (Ministry of Culture)
