About the Syrian Center for Justice and Accountability
The Syrian Center for Justice and Accountability is a leading Syrian human rights organization striving to achieve justice for crimes committed during the Syrian conflict. The center documents violations, supports criminal cases against Syrian perpetrators, and searches for those still missing. Since December 8, the center has been actively cooperating with the new Syrian government to support a comprehensive transitional justice process.

Position Summary
The Syria Justice and Accountability Centre (SJAC) is seeking a passionate legal professional to lead its justice policy work in Syria. The Justice Policy Advisor will work closely with the Executive Director, the Policy Team, and the Legal Team to formulate targeted recommendations and communicate them directly to relevant stakeholders in Syria, including the new Commission for Missing Persons, the Transitional Justice Commission, and the Ministry of Justice. The Advisor will also be responsible for representing SJAC at meetings and conferences held in Damascus, including with visiting diplomats and UN representatives. The ideal candidate should have a strong network in Damascus and be familiar with transitional justice processes. SJAC will consider candidates based in Damascus, as well as remote candidates willing to travel to Syria up to 25% of the time.

The Syrian Center for Justice and Accountability expects to offer a 12-month contract (with a three-month probationary period) for a consultant to support the center's efforts, for approximately 19 days per month. Contracts may be available for residents of the United States or Europe.

General duties and responsibilities
Communicate with Syrian government agencies, as well as local civil society and other stakeholders, to provide targeted technical advice on transitional justice processes and human rights protection. Serve as the principal representative of the Syrian Center for Justice and Accountability in Damascus, representing the Center's work to a diverse group of local stakeholders.
Closely monitor the work of relevant government agencies in the field of transitional justice, identify opportunities for collaboration, keep the SJAC team informed of updates, and draft public articles.
Working with the Syrian Center for Justice and Accountability team to hold in-person events in Damascus, including special discussion groups with stakeholders, as well as technical training courses.
Skills and Experience
University degree (Master's degree preferred) in Law, Political Science, Public Policy, International Relations, or any other related field.
Fluency in Arabic is a must; English is an added advantage.
Ability to travel regularly to Syria, Damascus, and other locations if deemed safe.
Strong professional networks in Damascus, including with the Ministry of Justice. Familiarity with relevant international justice mechanisms is preferred, including the UN International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) and the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in Syria (IIMP).
A collaborative team member able to work with various SJAC teams to integrate expertise from legal, documentation, and other fields into formulating policy positions.
