About

With its accession to the European Union, Romania has experienced a considerable boom in construction, and is receiving significant funding for infrastructure projects ranging from water and environment to road and rail network extensions. Arup established a permanent office in Bucharest, the capital and financial centre of Romania, in early 2006, after having successfully completed various projects in Romania over the years. Since then Arup has provided engineering and consultancy services to both the private and public sectors, on projects ranging from office buildings to highways

Existing infrastructures for water and transport require considerable upgrades to be brought to European Community standards; it is expected that this process will still take years to implement. An important part of the country is also subject to seismic activity, which adds a further complexity to the implementation of the many new developments in the country; this also affects the many turn-of-the century buildings in Bucharest and other cities, which require strengthening and or retrofit for any refurbishment of the existing fabric of the city.
